FIRE SAFETY
1. Install smoke detectors-at least one per floor.
2. Develop escape routes to the outside from each room.
3. Practice escape from your home-often. Hold some in the dark. Be familiar with
exit drills in the home. During the drills practice crawling low to the floor to avoid smoke. Teach older children to assist younger children.
4. Establish an assembly point for all to meet at after escape.
5. Have children practice reporting fire over telephone. They should know fire number, family name, home address and the nature of the fire.
6. Keeping working flashlights available for emergency use.
7. Keep trash away from fires and other heat sources.
8. Store flammable liquids properly OUTSIDE the home.
9. Do not overload electrical circuits.
10. Avoid the use of extension cords.
11. Check your smoke detectors often.
12. Install escape ladders for second floor escape.
13. Have a good wire or glass screen on your fireplace.
14. Ensure heating stoves properly installed and nearby walls are protected from the heat.
15. Have dry type fire extinguisher in kitchen.
FIRE IN THE HOME
1. Keep calm, think out every move, but remember - seconds count!!!!
2. Sound the alarm in the home-Have everyone exit as planned.
3. Call fire department if safe, if necessary use neighbor's phone.
4. During escape check any and all doors for heat and smoke before opening. If hot or smoke leaks under door, use an alternate route.
5. If exiting windows, slide out on stomach-Hang by hands and drop out, landing with knees bent. Best escape through window is a portable ladder kept in the room.
6. Go to assembly area/point-ensure all are accounted for.
7. If trapped in a room, stuff cloth around cracks and under door and air vents. If there is a phone in the room call fire department and report your exact position in the house. DO NOT HIDE IN THE CLOSET. If room fills with smoke stay low to the floor.
8. If smoke present during escape crawl low to the floor.
